Does Tawen work without Gemini Nano?
Yes. Your readiness score does not require Gemini Nano. Tawen calculates the number using rules on your phone. When on-device AI is available, it can write an explanation of that result. Otherwise, Tawen uses a rule-based explanation.
The number and the words have different jobs
The score summarizes supported Health Connect records using Tawen’s scoring rules and personal baselines where applicable. The explanation puts that result into words. Gemini Nano does not decide the number.
For example, a score of 72 can have either an AI-written explanation or a rule-based one. Changing the explanation engine does not, by itself, turn 72 into a different score. A later health-data sync can change the inputs; the score-change guide explains that separate behavior.
You still need enough usable health data. Neither AI nor the fallback can supply a sleep session or HRV reading that your source app has not shared.
Gemini and Tawen Fit describe who wrote the explanation
- Gemini: an explanation generated locally by Gemini Nano on a supported device.
- Tawen Fit: an explanation assembled from rules on your phone. It is not a second AI model.
These compact labels are used in the 1.1.4 interface; older versions may use longer attribution wording. Look at the attribution of the displayed insight rather than assuming every explanation on an AI-capable phone was written by a model.
A rule-based explanation can still be useful. It gives you a reading of the available result without depending on a model being ready. Both kinds of explanation are general wellness information, not a diagnosis or a decision about whether you should train.
Why Gemini Nano may be unavailable
On-device AI support depends on the phone and its software. Having the Gemini app installed, or using a Gemini cloud service, does not establish that Tawen’s on-device integration is supported.
Google’s ML Kit documentation lists device support by API. Its Prompt API guide distinguishes a supported, ready model from an unsupported or not-yet-ready setup. A model download or system configuration may still be needed.
Google updates that support over time. We link to its current list rather than promising that every phone from a particular brand can run the model.
What to check before assuming something is broken
- No score or missing signals? Check your source app’s sync and Health Connect permissions first. Start with setup or missing-data troubleshooting.
- A score with a rule-based insight? That is a supported way to use Tawen. It does not mean your health data must be uploaded to get an explanation.
- Expecting Nano on a supported device? Check that the app and relevant Android system components are up to date, and allow any model setup to finish. Support alone does not guarantee every generation succeeds.
- Still need help? Email [email protected] with your phone model, Android version, Tawen version and the wording you see. You do not need to send your health readings.
Pro changes access to features, not your phone’s AI support
Free includes the daily score, available-signal breakdown, a two-sentence daily insight preview and seven days of history. Pro is an optional one-time purchase that includes full daily insights, longer history and other conveniences. See the current Free and Pro comparison.
Buying Pro does not add Gemini Nano support to an unsupported phone. Choose the upgrade for the features you want; the scoring rules remain the basis of your readiness number.
The score and its explanation are processed on your phone. App diagnostics and optional usage analytics, and this website’s analytics, are separate topics covered in the privacy policy.
